Military Archdiocese Issues Letter for Veterans Day

WASHINGTON, D.C., NOV. 9, 2007 (Zenit.org).- Two military chaplains who died on duty, and who have since been declared Servants of God, were presented as models of generosity by the Archdiocese for the Military Services.

Bishop Richard Higgins, archdiocesan administrator and vicar for veterans affairs of the military archdiocese, said this in a statement issued today in honor of Veterans Day, to be observed this Sunday.

The bishop said Father Emil Kapaun (1916-1951) and Father Vincent Capodanno (1929-1967) “exemplified the best characteristics of true Christian generosity and compassion for their brother soldiers. In giving their lives in the service of God and country, they lived the Gospel message of ‘laying down one’s life’ for one’s friends and fellow soldiers.” Read the rest of this entry »

U.S. Bishops Support Child Tax Credit

By bluejaporms | November 11, 2007

WASHINGTON, D.C., NOV. 7, 2007 (Zenit.org).- U.S. bishops urged the House of Representatives to make the well-being of poor families with children a central priority when they debate and vote on the Temporary Tax Relief Act of 2007.

In a letter dated today, Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio, chairman of the conference’s Domestic Policy Committee, stated that the prelates continue to be strong supporters of the Child Tax Credit and believe it to be an essential program that helps low income working families live in decency.

“Unless Congress acts, poor working families will increasingly fall further behind. Our faith and moral principles call us to stand with these workers and their children and insist that their needs take priority in this tax debate,” Bishop DiMarzio wrote. “One moral measure of tax legislation is how it treats ‘the least among us.” Read the rest of this entry »

Excommunication Looms for Would-be Women Priests

By bluejaporms | November 11, 2007

St. Louis, Nov. 8, 2007 (CWNews.com) - Archbishop Raymond Burke of St. Louis has warned two local women that they face excommunication if they go through with plans for a Sunday ceremony at which they will claim to be ordained as priests.

The archbishop sent personal letters by courier to Rose Marie Dunn Hudson and Elsie Hainz McGrath, reminding them that they would incur the “censure of excommunication” if they participated in the ceremony, which is being held at a Jewish synagogue under the auspices of the “Womenpriests” organization.

Archbishop Burke noted that the fraudulent “ordination” ceremony, held in direct violation of Church teaching and authority, would constitute an “act of schism.” He warned the women that additional penalties could be used against them, along with the excommunication that would be automatically imposed.

McGrath told an AP reporter that she would ignore the archbishop’s warning, which she characterized as a “form of intimidation.”
